Merck Inc. has announced it will cease selling Propecia, a hair loss treatment that is in the early stages of approval and on the market.
The FDA is warning the company that Merck is likely to sell the drug on a site where it can't legally sell it to the public.
The drug is the first on the market to be approved for hair loss in men, and was approved to treat male pattern baldness in 1998, according to Merck's Web site.
Merck had the largest share of Merck sales for any pharmaceutical company since 1998, accounting for just over 8 percent of Merck's sales in the U. S.
For the past year, the company has been in the news because of a rise in reports of an enlarged prostate among men who suffer from male pattern baldness.
A study published in the journal' The Journal of the American Medical Association in March showed that more than 90 percent of men with male pattern baldness have experienced an enlarged prostate at some point in their lives.
In fact, according to the American Urological Association, more than one-third of all men in their 40s and 50s have a prostate that has been enlarged since their last sexual encounter.
The study by the U. National Institutes of Health, which is called the Prostate Cancer Prevention Trial, showed that about one-quarter of men in their 40s or early 50s experienced a higher chance of having prostate cancer compared to men who did not have the condition.
The study, the most-respected by the group, was published on the front page of the New England Journal of Medicine in July, which showed an increased risk of prostate cancer in men with androgenetic alopecia, the most common type of prostate cancer.
In fact, it was one of only a few studies published that found an increased risk of cancer for men with prostate cancer, and it was also the most-respected by the group for the study.
Merck said the company is reviewing the results and will update this information to ensure it is safe and effective for its current and future sales.
"In our view, the FDA's decision not to approve Propecia should be welcomed," said Dr. Andrew W. McAdams, chairman and chief executive officer of Merck.
A spokeswoman for Merck, Dr. Susan M. Brown, said the company is committed to its future products and is currently working with the FDA to develop new formulations that will reduce the risk of prostate cancer.
The company will not sell Propecia on the market, and will not promote it to the public, nor will it stock any of its products, including Propecia, which are used to treat male pattern baldness.
The company was acquired by GlaxoSmithKline in 1997 and the two companies also signed on to several other deals including an acquisition of Wyeth and a deal to merge Wyeth's hair loss treatment products.
Merck has already been sued by the United States Food and Drug Administration over the drug's alleged promotion of finasteride, a drug used to treat an enlarged prostate.
The FDA has not revealed the company's financial details for the time being, but has said it will seek to recover damages for the loss of sales and marketing expenses.
The company said its website will provide information on the company's current and future sales of Propecia.
